Versuch einer Deutung des Namens Wepel - Weppel - Weppelman(n)

Im deutschen Namenslexikon von Hans Bahlow steht unter dem Ortsnamen Weppel / Münster Wepel = Sumpf. Es bedeutet in der Nähe eines Moores/Sumpfes lebte ein Bauer, dessen Hofname "der Wepel" hieß. Es bezeichnet einen Ort - eine Umgebung in der Natur.

Sprachwissenschaftler Prof. Jost Gippert, Universität Frankfurt meint dazu:
" Ich moechte Sie nur darauf hinweisen, dass im Namenslexikon von Bahlow viel zu vieles auf eine Bedeutung wie "Sumpf" zurueckgefuehrt wird, womit zur kritischen Ueberpruefung Anlass gegeben ist. Die Deutung als Wepel - Weppel - Weppelman(n) als"Kriegsmann" ist demgegenueber in der Deutschen Namenkunde von Adolf Bach verzeichnet, die als ein wissenschaftliches Standardwerk gelten kann."

Im "Goldenen Buch" des Stiftes Freckenhorst steht unter Enigerloh "Wepele 12 Din." Darin wird festgehalten, daß der Hof Wepele (später Weppel - mann) bereits im 11. Jahrhundert vorhanden war. Interpretation of the name Wepel - Weppel - Weppelman(n)
The German dictionary of names by Hans Bahlow equals the place name Weppel / Muenster with marsh . It means that close to the marshlands lived a farmer whose farm was called “the Wepel”. It describes a natural place.

In contrast to that, linguist Prof. Jost Gippert from the University of Frankfurt states that in Bahlow’s dictionary too many words are related to marshlands, which gave cause or a critical investigation. In contrast, the interpretation of Wepel - Weppel - Weppelman(n) as “Man of war“ is registered in the book of German onomastics by Adolf Bach, which is considered a scientific authority.

First Generation 1. Domus von Wepele (man-n) was born around 1100 in Oelde. “Wepele 12 Din“ can be found written under Enigerloh in the “golden book” of the religous foundation of Freckenhorst. This confirms the existence of the Wepele (later Weppel-mann) farm as early as the 11th century. The book is kept in the Westfalia Museum in Muenster.
